150 athletes at Nite Race
Athletes from across the area arrived en masse to compete in the two distance categories.
Athletes took to the streets on Saturday evening for the annual Harriers Nite Race.
With the sun beating down through picturesque clouds overhead, walkers and runners set off from the Newcastle Swimming Pool to compete in the 10-kilometre and 21km events. Organisers said a total of 150 athletes entered this year.
The first male across the line in the 21km run was Bonginkosi Zwane from Phantane Athletics Club, who finished in a time of 1:16,08, with Sibongile Shezi from Siyaya the first female in 1:43,59. Ayanda Mngube (Phantane AC) and Xoli Madida (Carbineers – Pietermaritzburg) were the second male and female.
Representing Voltaren, Mtemba Lunga finished in first place in the 10km event in a time of 33,38, with Thabeka Mbatha of Biggarsberg the fastest female with 53,45 on the clock. Sello Mputi (Madadeni) and Chantelle Harris were in second place in the male and female categories respectively.
