Playing in hellish-hot conditions
Conditions for golf were good and with the course in ever-improving condition, some good golf scores were returned by the competitors
Saturday afternoon’s golf competition was sponsored by Durnford’s Lodge and played as an Individual Stableford event.
Although hellish-hot, with a slight breeze, conditions for golf were good and with the course in ever-improving condition (especially the greens), some good golf scores were returned by the competitors. Winner of the competition with 40 Stableford points was Bransby Niemach, followed closely by Retief Marais with 39 points, Aurette Boardman with 38 points, and Patrick Pieterse and Russell Goosen with 37 points.
Surprisingly, not one golfer managed to card a two-club which made the ‘piggy’ grunt with glee.

The remaining matches for the 10th round of the Mortimer Toyota League were played over the weekend. These were the two matches that were postponed to accommodate our members who were celebrating Diwali the previous week. The team points positions after 10 rounds now has the Rough Riders out front with 58 points, Automark on 55 points, Four Must Get Beers on 51 points, Bell’s Cousies on 45 points, and the rest follow. The 11th and final round is scheduled for Sunday, December 8, and although the front-running teams seem to have stretched a lead, there could still be a final hurdle upset.
The Business League, sponsored by Ferobrake, got underway on Thursday afternoon at 4.30pm. Played as a Four-Ball Alliance over nine holes, this summertime golfing event is sure to be very popular once again.
Friday evening’s Guy Fawkes event, with a terrific fireworks display, attracted a larger than anticipated crowd who all thoroughly enjoyed the well organised fireworks extravaganza (orchestrated by Anand Riga and his helpers), the burning at the stake of a huge ‘Guy’ and the scrumptious supper that followed. The children from Môrester and from the Ellen Margaret Cook Crèche in Roosboom enjoyed the treats, supper and fireworks. Thanks to Grace Mitchell and her willing helpers for the excellent arrangements. This function has become a very popular annual event and has grown in numbers annually. The fireworks display was well organised, all safety precautions were taken, neighbours were warned in advance to look after their pets, and the ‘bangs’ did not last more than the advertised hour.
On Saturday afternoon, the bowls tabs-in saw three ladies taking on three men and a lady in what turned out to be a true challenge and a right ‘pasting’ for the men’s team. Cheryl, Glynnis and Veronika were determined not to let Gavin, Ettienne, Pier and Liz get off the mark and just piled on the pressure through to the last bowl on each end to deny the men and Liz being able to have a drink ‘in the Bar’. 21 ends later, the ladies won the challenge with a huge score of 30-6. Well done, but there will be another time!
Friday’s ‘100 Club’ draw was won by No. 99, Jeff Richmond, who was not present, so this Friday we draw for two-grand.
Saturday’s golf competition is the November Monthly Mug, sponsored by Shona’s Plant Hire.
On Sunday, the LCC Mixed Trips tournament, sponsored by Ntokozweni Development, starts at 8.30am with two games of 12 ends and one of 15 ends to be played. Entries for this Mixed Trips sponsored tournament were closed on Monday, November 11, with a full entry of 14 teams, so we look forward to a full day’s bowls and good fellowship.
