Tight results and huge wins
The standard of bowls was good, with some very tight results and also some huge wins recorded in the three-round event
The Ladysmith Country Club’s Mixed Trips bowls tournament, sponsored by Ntokozweni Developers, was played on Sunday.
This very popular type of competition attracted a full entry of 14 teams which required the bowling green to be prepared for seven rinks to accommodate this entry. Trips teams from Harrismith, Bergville, Klipbank and Country Club made up the 42 bowlers who enjoyed a day’s bowls, albeit in rather windy conditions for most of the day. Nevertheless, the standard of bowls was good, with some very tight results and also some huge wins recorded in the three-round event.
Three of the teams remained unbeaten at the end of the day, so the shot aggregate result came into effect to decide the winners. Overall winners with six points and a +41 shot aggregate were Geoff Lee, Cor Kleynhans and Risha Ramdin. Runners-up with six points and a +12 shot aggregate were Graham Elworthy, John Elworthy and Veronika Schuler, with the ‘Moores’ (Russell Moore, Walter Moore and Debbie Moore) taking third place with six points +6. Fourth place went to the Harrismith team of Adam Bookless. Willie Steenkamp and Hanna Botha with four points +21. Special mention again to the ladies who prepared the super tea and scrumptious lunch which all the bowlers and visitors enjoyed.
The Shona’s Plant Hire Monthly Mug was played on Saturday afternoon, with a good field of golfers competing for this monthly event. Winner of the ‘A’ Division Mug was Phillip Boardman with a fine 68 net and the winner of the ‘B’ Division Mug was Aurette Boardman, also with a fine 68 net. Keeping it in the family was Gerald Boardman who carded the ‘Best Gross’ score. Runner-up in the ‘B’ Division Mug was Gerhard van der Westhuizen. The ‘Longest Drive’ was won by Carla Craffert. Maybe we should let her play off the men’s tees? Thokozani Dladla and Phillip Boardman carded the only two-clubs. The Ferobrake Business League second round was played on Thursday afternoon in a howling gale, but hats off to all the golfers who accepted that the conditions were the same for all teams and persevered through to the end. The fellowship braai that followed was enjoyed by all. The third round is this Thursday at 4.30pm and this week we play the ‘front nine’.
The competition on Saturday, November 23, is sponsored by Ladysmith Gymnastics and Saturday, November 30, is the Moth’s Golf & Bowls Day, a very popular annual event not to be missed. The Ladysmith Harrismith Challenge match, originally scheduled for Sunday, November 24, has been postponed to a date in February next year.
Friday evening’s ‘100 Club’ draw was won by Anna Fasen who, at the time, was in hospital after the arrival of her new baby daughter. Congratulations Anna and we look forward to your return to the Pro-Shop soon.
When it comes to congratulations, the pick of the week is the 90th birthday of our club’s Honourary Life President, George Johnston, who completed his 90th lap on Tuesday the 19th. Congratulations, George – enjoy celebrating with your family and friends, and may you see many more completed laps before He brings down the checkered flag.
