Top bowlers emerge at championship

Some of the province’s top bowlers have ‘emerged’ at a recent championship event.

The KwaZulu-Natal Country Bowls (KZNCB) Emerging Masters Singles were played at Richards Bay Bowling Club last weekend, with the format of play a sectional competition.

Players were divided into two sections of six, with each player playing one another to determine the section winners.

Tony de Poorter of Volksrust BC (8 + 29) won his section on a count out, ahead of Dion Leiaty of Richards Bay (8 + 17), with the other section won by Brenden van Vreden, a young bowler from Piet Retief (8 + 9).

Newcastle’s Steven Shaw (6 + 19) and Trevor Douthwaite (6 + 5) were not far behind.

Barbara Baleri from Ladysmith CC (8 + 27) won the ladies’ section, with Sharon Nicol of Empangeni (6 + 16) and Ida Oosthuisen of Harrismith (6 + 11) in close contention.

The only player to win all her games was Sylvia Malan (Dundee 10 + 26), ahead of E Schoeman (8 + 45).

The four sectional winners have all qualified to compete in the Main Masters Tournament, which will be hosted in Newcastle in January of the new year.

Henk Zaal, Shaun Rheeder and Bert Rodgers won the monthly chicken competition played last Saturday.

The ever popular Spring Fedauto Business League draws to a close this Thursday evening with the playoffs between the two sections resulting in the following match-ups:

The final of the club men’s pairs competition between Stephen Shaw/Bert Rodgers and Billy Nicholas/Billy Villiers will be played this Saturday afternoon.
