Local karate students prepare for National JKA Championships
Not only was emphasis placed on the different katas each participant will be performing in his/her division, but there was also extensive training in kihon and kumite, plus the importance of hip movement

A training session for the Northern Kwa-Zulu-Natal squad who will participate at the National JKA Championships in Johannesburg was held at the Arbor Park school hall on Saturday, April 26.
Practice started at 8am and all the karatekas present were updated on the latest changes and rules regarding this prestigious event.
Not only was emphasis placed on the different katas each participant will be performing in his/her division, but there was also extensive training in kihon and kumite, plus the importance of hip movement.
The training session, which was about four hours long, consisted of kata (a series of movements designed to perfect form, agility, stamina, power and speed), kumite (sparring or training against an adversary) and kihon (basic techniques).
It also included sessions of fitness aimed at increasing stealth and strength.
The training ended with a bit of fun and games, reminding the karatekas that the art of karate is practised out of love.
