Preparations for the popular Dundee July Rural Horse Riding Race are at an advanced stage. Of particular significance is the fact that the 2014 event will mark ten years since the 2004 inaugural festival.
The race will take place on Saturday, July 19 at its traditional venue, the Dundee horse-racing track near the airfield. As has become a tradition, it will be preceded by a multi-cultural street parade on Friday through the town centre at midday.

Under the theme ‘Freedom to Reign: Celebrating 20 years of Democracy’, this year’s event will pull out all the stops to showcase the glitz and glamour which have become a vital part of the event. 

This event, which has become one of the major events on the calendar in the province, was the brainchild of the KZN Department of Sport and Recreation, with Gold Circle, Umzinyathi District Municipality and Endumeni Local Municipality as major partners.
The race is modelled on the most popular Durban July race. However, traditional horse-riding is unique in that the jockeys and racing horses are drawn from ordinary village riders from all over the province. The positive growth of the race has attracted participants from the neighbouring Mpumalanga province as well as Lesotho.

The event also affords aspiring fashion designers a platform to showcase their creations. It ends with an all-night long musical extravaganza featuring popular musicians and local artists. Entry is free for all the activities.
