Karateka train hard 100 times

Karate Day is celebrated annually on October 25, with a demonstration of a kata performed 100 times, representing the Japanese saying, ‘Train hard 100 times,’

More than 5 000 karateka globally participated in this year’s 100 kata for Karate Day.

Karate Day is celebrated annually on October 25, with a demonstration of a kata performed 100 times, representing the Japanese saying, ‘Train hard 100 times,’ and the event is open to all styles and dojos.

Globally, the event began at 6am Japanese Standard Time, on October 25.

In Okinawa, the event took place at the world heritage site Zakimi Castle.

Closer to home, Shorin-ryu Butokukan pupils of Newcastle performed the 100 kata at Sensei Frik Willemse’s private home dojo.

The pupils began their 100 kata on Friday October 24 at 11pm to ensure they began together with their Okinawan counterparts.

“I’m proud to say that all the Newcastle Butokukan students who participated managed to complete all 100 repetitions of their chosen kata. We did it as a group from the first till the last kata. By the time we reached 90 repetitions we were all exhausted, but to be honest, the last 10 repetitions felt the best! This was not only a great event to be a part of, but it was also a great workout and great team building exercise for the students. We’ll do it again next year,” said Sensei Frik.
