Despite the looming threats of rain on Saturday morning, soccer players from Lincoln Heights Secondary School were determined to participate in the school’s first ever Astro Turf Tournament.

According to Aslam Randeree, a pupil from the school, he had come up with the idea of the tournament in an attempt to resurrect a passion for sports among youth.

“I am the head of sport at school and I wanted to introduce a new sport code and get all the pupils involved at the same time,” he said.

He decided on a Newcastle Soccer Association (NCSA) Astro Turf Tournament.

Aslam said it was the ideal way for teenagers, boys and girls, to enjoy soccer, while staying away from social ills such as drugs and alcohol.

“We would like to make it an annual event, as it was well supported with 16 teams joining,” he said.

The 16 teams battled it out, however, there could only be one winner.

Outlaws walked away trophy in hand, and captain Aslam Randeree, felt proud knowing not only had he and his schoolmates worked hard to bring the tournament to the school, but now his team were able to walk away trophy in hand as well.

In the girls four-team battle royale, The Terminators led by Captain Jameelah Seedat clinched victory in the finals during a penalty shoot-out, showing their definition of ‘girl-power’.
