Finding the perfect bowling touch

Burnt End

The inaugural FedAuto 2 bowls trips competition was an occasion for Northern KwaZulu-Natal.

Hosted in Newcastle last weekend, the competition featured teams from Estcourt, Ladysmith, Dundee, Volksrust, Ncandu Bowling Club and Newcastle Bowling Club.

Unpleasant, blustery conditions did not deter the players.

After a good day on the greens, sponsored prizes were awarded to the teams placed in the top six, a list rounded off by the Estcourt team of Franco Lepera on 6+18.

John Douthwaite, Lou Roux and Eleen Roux were fifth on 6+21.

The top four teams were: Ron Howe, Alice Howe and Ann Wood (6+43), Nan Roos, Lourens Roos and Robin Lowe (Dundee 6+36), Martinus Bower Junior, Martinus Bower Senior and Jaco Heunis (Ncandu 6+31), and the team of Samantha Shaw, Aspen Shaw and Vicky van der Merwe (6+26).

Following the competition, bowlers showed off their caring side.

The spyder, a little white ball also called a jack or kitty, was placed at the centre of the green with a coin atop it, with bowlers lining the four sides of the green.

After the count-down, the players all released their bowls simultaneously.

The bowler finishing closest to the coin was awarded the coveted Blind Bowlers Association badge, with each player dipping into their pockets to raise a fantastic R992.

This donation aids those who play the marvellous game, despite their handicap.

On a side note, members are reminded of the Newcastle Bowling Club prize giving and AGM, to be held on July 24 and 25 respectively.

A good turnout for both events will be appreciated.
