Cold start to NFWAA season

The much-anticipated start at Richgate Park, Chelmsford Dam saw expectant anglers greeted by icy weather and misty early morning conditions.

It was a chilly beginning for the Natal Fresh Water Angling Association’s season on Sunday.

The much-anticipated start at Richgate Park, Chelmsford Dam saw expectant anglers greeted by icy weather and misty early morning conditions.

Most clubs were well represented and anglers were keen to cast off on a good note.

At dawn, the lines were cast out with an array of bait combinations in an attempt to lure fish onto the hooks, but the fish were elusive and catches were minimal.

Anglers moved spots frequently, hoping to bag a solitary fish for the weigh-in.

This was not to be for most, and only 10 of the approximately 130 anglers netting weighable fish and no angler bagging more than one fish.

Be that as it was, Itec Freespool accrued 11 points as winners of the day.

The club was followed by Dannhauser and Glencoe angling clubs on two points apiece, while David Carolissen of Freespool was the day’s top angler with the heaviest carp of 2,1 kilogrammes.

Dan Mohanram of Chemlsford Angling Club reeled in the heaviest barbel of 980 grams.

The sponsor for the first round of the league put up R1 000 for the winning team, and the concept of offering incentives at each stage has resulted in many clubs registering new members to strengthen themselves.

Round two of the NFWAA league takes place on August 23, at Sandford.

In other news, the winners of the 2014/2015 season in Docrats (Knock-Out champions) and Itec Freespool (overall League champions) were presented with their trophies and prizes recently.

“Thank you to all affiliated clubs for their contributions towards a successful season,” said NFWAA president, Liaquat Ahmed.
