League set to cast off

The ‘angler of the day’, the one who accumulates the most points, will be awarded an outright trophy, the orange cap and R200 cash at the conclusion of each competition

The Angling Professional League starts with the hosting of their first league cast off at Sandford on Sunday (August 16), which is sponsored by Vees Micro Enterprises. The winner of the league is difficult to predict, as both Breakwaters and Challengers will resume their traditional rivalry when they were previously affiliated to the association. Their rivalry and competitiveness is similar to the El Classico between Barcelona and Read Madrid.

Breakwaters have their old team intact, while Challengers have regrouped and have a formidable team.

As the dark horse of the league, Stillwaters also have a number of new recruits who have joined the APL and their performance is unknown. They could spring a few surprises during the course of the season!

The ‘angler of the day’, the one who accumulates the most points, will be awarded an outright trophy, the orange cap and R200 cash at the conclusion of each competition.

The angler leading the log will don the purple cap.

New categories have been introduced which include: ‘heaviest scaled fish’, ‘heaviest non-scaled fish’, ‘junior angler of the year (below 16 years of age)’, ‘senior angler of the year (over 60 years)’, ‘lady angler of the year’ and the ultimate title of ‘angler of the year’.

R500 will be awarded for rare species in the order of bass, eel or scaly, while anglers cracking the 4kg and 10kg mark for Carp and Barbel respectively also pocket a cool sum of R500.

This season, the top three anglers for the season will be awarded angling tackle from renowned brand names such as Sensation, Daiwa, Okuma and Rapala (stockist of Shimano range). These prizes will include household appliances, office equipment, outdoor equipment, power tools, motor accessories, sound equipment, office automation equipment, etc.

The estimated prize package for the top three anglers of the season is R5000, R3000 and R2000 respectively. These incentives and prize money are likely to draw great interest among the high calibre of anglers affiliated in the ranks of the APL.

Both Breakwaters and Stillwaters took to the water in their pre-season fixture, the ‘Champion of Champions’ round one at Sandford. Shakeel Sheik topped the log with two points, followed by Nadir Chrisenduth (two points) and Radie Roberts (one point) on a day characterised by some very poor catches.

The APL will also be hosting an overnight open competition on November 28 and 29 at Sandford. Details will be announced closer to the event.

Affiliation to the APL is ongoing and members are urged to register if they are interested in joining the league. Please contact Terence Chetty (072-786-0866); Sanvir Goli (073-566-4052); Monty Slabbert (082-391-6324); Barge Ramlal (082-414-3915) or Matthew Shunmugam (082-807-8919).
