Fierce bowls competition to chase the winter blues away

A beautiful winter's day saw some excellent bowls and much concentration as the competition hotted up

Snow on the mountain tops and frost on the ground did not deter the 16 teams of three bowlers per team who participated in the Mortimer Toyota Mixed Trips Bowls Tournament on Sunday, August 2 at the Mooi River Country Club.

A beautiful winter’s day saw some excellent bowls and much concentration as the competition hotted up. Two games of twelve ends each were played before lunch and one game of fourteen ends was played after lunch. Teams from Pietermaritzburg, Estcourt, Ixopo, Bergville, Greytown, Estcourt and Howick joined local players for the tournament.

The first place was won by a team from Greytown Bowling Club consisting of Tony Smith, Sanie Balzer and Andre Roberts. Second place went to Colin and Bernice Burden and Alison Toms of Umgeni Waterfall Bowling Club in Howick.

In third place was Roger Bowyer of Pietermaritzburg and Kathy Boast and Toni Hanrahan of the Mooi River Bowling Club. The funds raised from the Spider after lunch will be donated to the Mooi River Old Age Homes.

Thank you to the sponsors for their on-going support of the Mooi River Bowling Club.
