As predicted, the intense competition between Breakwaters and Challengers lived up to expectation.
In the first round of the VME League Championship, and with rather testing conditions, anglers from the rival clubs tried their best to lure in elusive fish.
Sadly, bites were few and far between.
With only a handful of anglers managing to weigh in some points, the stand-out angler was Dan Govender, who racked up nine points and the honour of being this season’s orange and purple cap bearer.
For this, he received the outright trophy and R200 in cash.
At the weigh-in, the tension was clearly visible on the faces of anglers, and in the end, Breakwaters narrowly edged a gallant Challenges outfit.
The score was 17 points to 15.
Stillwaters also gave a good account of itself, with its three nets bagging seven points, regardless the unavailability of many team members.
Breakwaters earned R500 for winning the league fixture.
The heaviest carp was caught by Prenesh Pandoy of Breakwaters, weighing in at 2,76 kilograms, while nine-year-old Ethan Burger of Stillwaters and 12-year-old Kameshan Govender of Challengers registered two and one point respectively.
Many of their senior counterparts could not boast the same.
At present, the VME League log saw Breakwaters first on six points, ahead of Challengers on four and Stillwaters on two.
Organisers are prepared for the rest of the season to be ding-dong affairs.
The following fixture of the APL is the League Two, taking place at Richgate Park on August 30 – stay tuned for results.
