Karateka graded to the next level

On Saturday, candidates were put through their paces, not only during grading under a strict panel of judges, but also during a training session beforehand.

Sensei Angus Burns and Sensei Warren McCall obtained their second Dan last Saturday.

This followed a gruelling three-hour session attended by senior brown and black belts, under the guidance and experience of sixth Dan, Sensei Johan la Grange, the chief instructor of South African JKA.

Nine other karateka received their Shodan, or first level black belts, on the same day.

They are Arno Grobler, Jeandre Minnaar, Abigail Crocker, Tharan Schulmann, Charles Schulmann, Aneke Grundling, Musa Ndlovu, Mthunzi Mbatha, Cara Burns and Cathy van der Watt.

“Leading up to the grading were months of extensive training, of approximately eight to twelve hours a week, together with dedication, commitment and a desire to achieve a goal which has been lifelong for many, certainly since beginning as a white belt,” explained the head of Newcastle JKA, Sensei Johan Swart.

On Saturday, candidates were put through their paces, not only during grading under a strict panel of judges, but also during a training session beforehand.

Speed and agility, kicks, blocks and punches were combined with hip movement for maximum power.

Kata and new techniques were taught and needed to be incorporated into the grading by candidates, a feat not easily mastered under such pressure.

Nevertheless, Sensei Johan congratulated all candidates who passed their grading.

“Congratulations also to the Senseis who helped them reach this point. It is a wonderful achievement for the individual and the JKA region.”
