Teams battle it out to be kings of the court

A surge of excitement filled the air at the Paradise Futsal Court on Sunday, as 24 teams participated in the Supersonic Street Ball Kings tournament.

A surge of excitement filled the air at the Paradise Futsal Court on Sunday, as 24 teams participated in the Supersonic Street Ball Kings tournament.

The one-day tournament, was held in conjunction with the Newcastle Futsal League, to raise funds for repairs to the court.

Four divisions ensured all teams received an adequate chance to secure victory.

With a prize pool of approximately R4000 up for grabs, all participating teams went all out for the win.

In the under 17 division, Real Alencos managed to out score Cool Customs in a penalty shootout, and were crowned the winners of the U/17 category

Imphuphu Wholesalers U/17 team took second place, after defeating NFL6 who in turn clinched third place.

During the cultural division, NFL6 took third place yet again, Hope Church came second and Cutting Edge Ministries secured first place.

In the over 40s division, Newcastle United beat Legends FC two-nil during the finals, after displaying a very mature style of football.

In the open division, NFL 6 were crowned the 2015 Street Ball Kings after

beating Zenith FC four-three on penalties. Real Santos secured a position in third place, after winning NCC Stars four-nil.

Terence Chetty, event organiser, said the tournament was well supported and thanked the sponsors, teams and spectators for making the day possible. He also thanked Cllr Matthew Shunmugam and Spencely Perumal for their contribution.

With the day catering to the soccer needs of the community, Mr Chetty ensured future tournaments would be held.

“A series of tournaments will be held to ensure we reach our target of repairing Paradise Astro Turf Court,” he concluded.
