Focus, determination and practice are key aspects of martial arts.

Stefan van Niekerk is the picture of these characteristics, putting his knowledge to the test to achieve a second Dan grading at the beginning of the month.

The Newcastle JKA pupil attended a grading at Honbu Dojo in Johannesburg.

Before a panel of internationally acclaimed examiners, Stefan undertook a gruelling class of three hours, with the focus on karate basics, kata and kumite.

This was followed by an intensive pre-Dan course, where participants were told what to expect.

Leading up to his grading, Stefan received his first Dan black belt in 2013, and trained extensively in Newcastle to advance to the next level.

“During this period, Stefan obtained gold, silver and bronze medals at the Northern KwaZulu-Natal JKA Championships and the South African JKA Championships. He is also ranked one of the top competitors in his division in the country, and is constantly placed in the top three,” explained NKZN JKA instructor, Sensei Johan Swart.

Stefan also represented South Africa at the Africa Cup, held in September this year.

“This is a wonderful and hard-earned achievement, one he and NKZN JKA can be proud of.”
