Volksrust Bowling Club hosted the Northern Zone men's and women's fours competition last weekend with 11 male teams and five female teams participating.

Volksrust Bowling Club hosted the Northern Zone men’s and women’s fours competition last weekend with 11 male teams and five female teams participating.

After four rounds of tightly-contested round robin play, the female winners, Newcastle’s Alice Howe, Dorothy Crosbie, Vicky van der Merwe and Lindsay McArthur recovered from a slow start to win their last three games and annex the title.

The Vryheid team of Lorraine Vincent, Margaret van Heusden, Rina Lloyd and Noela Dreyer finished as runners-up.

The 11 men’s teams were divided into two sections of six and five.

After the completion of the round robin games, both sections were headed by an unbeaten team who will now compete against each other at the KwaZulu-Natal Country Bowls playoffs to determine the zone winner.

Vryheid’s Phillip Scheepers, John Cross, Henry Klofta and Nolan Malan, and Newcastle’s John Douthwaite, Erich Holm, Colin Broderick and Adriaan van der Merwe were the section winners.

The April FedAuto monthly meat competition played at the beginning of the month, was won by Ron Howe, Eleen Roux and Gail Smith, with Henk Zaal, Hennie Schnetler,

Gail Villiers and Alex Zaal the runners-up.

The KZNCB play-offs for the annual Pairs Pro 10 competition will be held in Dundee next weekend and Newcastle’s representatives, Sid Price, Lou Roux, Erich Holm and Simon Ball are wished good bowling.
