Dojo Butokukan to host a exhibition tournament

Dojo Butokukan, will be hosting a karate exhibition tournament on Saturday

Dojo Butokukan, will be hosting a karate exhibition tournament on Saturday, April 23 at Newcastle Senior Primary School.

Sensei Frik Willemse of Butokukan Newcastle said the purpose of the day is for karateka to show off their unique traditional Okinawa skills where all styles, from kata, kumite and kobudo combine into a MMA tournament.

The tournament will also prepare karateka for the South African Sport Combat Association (SASCA) Championships, set to take place from July 2 to July 3 in Pretoria.

“Students will have the opportunity to show their parents what they have learned and will also demonstrate their skills. There will also be a brief self-defence lesson,” he said.

Although the tournament is for club members only, the public is welcome to sit in and admire the art of traditional Okinawa in its purest form.

“Door entry will be free and a basic canteen will be available.”

Anyone interested in Butokukan karate can contact Sensei Frik Willemse on 060 725 9815.
