Cougars to claw their way through Algeria

The tournament will see wrestlers from across Africa

NEWCASTLE Cougars Wrestling Club is putting its name on the map.

On June 6, Eldrich Nortjè and Wiehan Whelan will travel to Algeria to participate in the Africa Wrestling Tournament, an event which could very well change their lives.

The tournament will see wrestlers from across Africa, vying to compete in the world championships later this year.

The 15-year-old Eldrich is ecstatic about being selected to go to Algeria.

“I have been wrestling for 10 years, and this is a huge opportunity for me,” he saiid.

The 17-year-old Wiehan is just as enthusiastic about the upcoming trip.

“I have been training for 12 years and I am looking forward to gaining more experience,” he enthused.

Lizzy de Wet of the club committee, will accompany the South African team as manager.

“I am very excited, as this is a first for our club,” she said.

Mrs de Wet has been involved in wrestling for eight years and is eager to ensure the South African team is in top form for the event.

“Before I was selected, I had to undergo a lot of training, and write exams which I had to pass with over 80 per cent. I also have an extensive knowledge about the sport.”

Congratulations to the Newcastle Cougars Club on these achievements!
