NEWCASTLE – His eye on the target; his body tense in anticipation. Asande Mahaye is determined to vanquish his opponent.

The 11-year-old Asande is an avid squash player, with a natural aptitude that has been honed since he picked up a squash racket for the first time two years ago.

In 2015, Asande made his debut in competitive squash when he participated in the KwaZulu-Natal trials and was selected for the u/11 KZN team.

He will participate in the Inter-Provincial Trials (IPT) over a four-day period on June 25 in Port Elizabeth.

“I was selected to represent the KZN u/13 team at the IPT, as there is no u/12 division,” Asande explained.

Despite facing older competitors and more experienced, he is positive he will not easily be defeated.

“It will be a challenge, but I am prepared to take them on. I hope to win most of my matches, win a prize and make it to the top 10 in the South African national team,” he said.

However, Asande needs sponsors to help him financially.

“We would really like to see someone ‘adopt’ him to make it easier, as squash can be an expensive sport, especially the travelling,” said Asande’s coach, Faisal Shaik.

Currently, he has two sponsorships, but requires more in order for him to reach his full potential.

Anyone willing to assist Asande can contact Faisal Shaik on 072 807 0668.
