Pigeon fanciers take flight
Pigeons took to the skies for two events at the end of July.
Veteran pigeon fanciers impressed at recent Newcastle Racing Pigeon Club events. Club chairman, Kiewiet Oosthuizen marshalled his young birds best at the Trompsburg race of July 23, pursued by Koos Ferreira in positions two to four.
Koos would redeem himself in the old bird race. He was closely followed by Dolf Grimbeek (positions two and four) and Renier van Niekerk, who earned the bronze finish.
The pack shifted slightly at the race from Springfontein on July 30. Koos Ferreira displayed a wholly dominant knack for the sport, claiming each of the top five spots with the young birds. He also scalped position one in the old bird race.
The remainder of the top five included Renier van Niekerk, Gerhard van der Merwe and Koos Ferreira.
