NEWCASTLE – The weekend saw a tough challenge for members of the Newcastle Racing Pigeon Club.

Conditions were tough on the day of the Colesberg race, and fanciers waited in anticipation for their flocks to return home.

This time around, Johan Ferreira ended in first place in the young bird race.

Koos Ferreira’s pigeons were only slightly off the pace, and helped him end the day with positions two to four.

The old bird race was an entirely different story.

Renier van Niekerk soared to first and second place, followed by chairman, Kiewiet Oosthuizen (third and fifth).

Four place went to Gerhard van der Merwe.
