NEWCASTLE – The second half of the Newcastle and Districts Cricket Association season commenced with three night league matches.

This was the opening salvo of the KFC T20 competition.

Ithemba League champions, Asians were quickly out of the blocks with an impressive performance, which led the team to a 40-run victory over Underdogs.

Asians batsman, Sohail Gori top-scored and was Man of the Match with 109 runs.

Eagles also got its campaign off to a good start against Lennoxton, thanks to captain, Sandile Hlatshwayo’s pivotal knock of 64.

This boosted Eagles’ total to 113 for the loss of five wickets.

Although Ansar Siddique led the Lennoxton charge with a fine 48, Hlatshwayo and Mxolisi Zuma picked up three wickets each to restrict Lennoxton to 98.

The clash between FNB Insurance Phoenix and Highlands was a nail-biter.

Highlands opened the score sheet with 128 runs, thanks to a stellar innings of 54 by captain, Braeden Coetzee.

In response, Phoenix found itself in trouble early thanks to quick wickets.

Andrew Charters would ultimately save the day for Phoenix, mustering an unbeaten 50 runs to help his team to victory with four balls in hand.
