The golf bug bites on Ladysmith Pharmacy day
“There is no pharmacist that can prescribe a drug that can cure the addiction of golf”
This past year has seen the number of sponsored tournaments and rounds of golf and bowls grow quite considerably and this has been very rewarding for the club committees that have put in the effort to ensure that the sponsors were well accommodated.
The club held its yearly sponsors cocktail party on Thursday evening to thank all our sponsors for their valuable support over the year gone by and an opportunity for newcomers to develop their brands.
A large turnout of sponsors were keen to book their tee-off dates for this coming year and thanks to their generosity as well as their commitment and confidence in the club we have a very full calendar for 2017.
Thank you very much and we look forward to assisting you all through the year.
A very busy Friday evening started off with the draw which was won by Gary Beaton and Stuart Hanlon taking the consolation prize. After the draw, a large number of diners sat down to enjoy their dining experience, while listening to the tinkling notes of the ivories played by Nora.
Saturday arrived with a large contingent of over 400 park runners converging on the club to get into shape, meet friends, and or just to enjoy a stroll which was followed by one of the largest fields of golfers seen at the club for some time tee off for the Ladysmith Pharmacy sponsored day.
Dolf Pollard and the Ladysmith Pharmacy have been part of the Ladysmith landscape for over 30 years when he first opened a store in June 1985 near where Game is today, before moving to Murchison Street where he is now situated. Dolf matriculated from Hoerskool Ben Viljoen and studied and qualified as a pharmacist and got an honours degree in reading of doctor’s prescriptions at NWU Potschefstroom.
Dolf is always on hand to give advice and I once asked, what can I do, I got a headache in two places he replied “Don’t go to those places.” It was great to see the jovial and smiling Kim at the first tee box dispensing some sort of energy drink which after looking at the results did not seem to work to well for some – perhaps pain killer would have been better. There was a strong cross wind blowing which like that ancient Sicilian proverb – as the weather goes so does the golfer – cross and blown all about the place.
There are many proverbs relating to medicine such as, take your medicine… or a spoon full of sugar… but probably the most suited for the day was, laughter is the best medicine and I’m sure that there was much of it amongst the fourballs, out on the course as there certainly was at the 19th hole.
For Dries Slabbert and Gerry Grobler they got the dosage to a complete recovery right, and with good healthy golf, they prescribed that 47 points would be good enough to win and so it was. There was a three way tie for second with 44 points and the elderly but youthful pairing of Dave Salmond and Steve Dixon (who outshone the younger generation of the Salmond family with some quite brilliant and adventurous golf) took the count out from a very in-form pairing of Wynand Wessels and “the professional” Vernon Naidoo with Dolf and Willie Erasmus settling for fourth. The nearest the pin winners were Thokozane Dladla on the 3rd, Warren Petersen on the 8th, Dolf and Wynand on the 11th and 12th. There were seven two club winners in Dolf, Thokozane, Vernon, Dries, as well as Marcel Meyer, Patrick Mbatha and Segi Pillay.
Well done to all the winners and once again a big thanks to Dolf and his Ladysmith Pharmacy team for organizing a truly magnificent day and for halfway. I will leave you with this quote “There is no pharmacist that can prescribe a drug that can cure the addiction of golf.”
