This annual event serves as a qualifier for the Nationals.

Chairman of the swimming club, Barry Visagie explained it was also hosted as an opportunity for swimmers to showcase their talents, and also earn due rewards.

“It’s difficult for our swimmers to travel to Durban to qualify. This is our second year hosting the gala.”

Swimmers from Newcastle, Ladysmith and elsewhere in the province competed in individual and medley events, across the range of strokes.

A number of records were broken to boot.

From Newcastle Swimming Club, top medallists included Gustav Boshoff, who earned five gold, four silver and three bronze medals, and Varish Ramautar, who claimed five golds, four silvers and one bronze.

Jared Scheepers ended with five gold and four silver medals.

Handre du Preez earned five golds, one silver and two bronzes, while Kai Goosen did well with one silver and three bronze medals.

Erich van Zyl had two bronze finishes.

Congratulations to all medallists on their achievements in the water.
