Old Boys dominate the cricket pitch
During the Trevor Smith Sports Shield tournament, FNB Insurance Brokers and Drakensberg Old Boys qualified for the semi-finals during the weekend.
The Newcastle District Cricket Association (NDCA) season delivered some of the best batting displays in both leagues this week
On February 8, Graham Sharp smashed 161 runs in the KFC Night League that helped FNB Insurance Brokers Phoenix to 208 from their allotted 20 overs.
In reply, Drakensberg Old Boys were on 61 runs in the 11th over when the heavens opened that gave Phoenix the win by way of the Duckorth/Lewis system.
Paradise eliminated Highlands from the night league race on February 9. Paradise posted 106 and then defended the score as Highlands could only manage 94.
Asians are in the lead for the Group A division in the KFC Night League logs, followed closely by Eagles in second place and Underdogs in third position. In the Group B division, Phoenix is leading the pack, followed by Paradise and Drakensberg Old Boys in second and third place respectively.

Graham Sharp scored 153 runs in a total of 233 runs for Phoenix, while the NDCA Invitation side almost caused a massive upset as they replied with 230 runs, thanks to Arslan Butt’s unbeaten 115. The win kept Phoenix at the top of their group.
Old Boys took care of business against Lennoxton as they secured a six-wicket win and a place in the semi-finals. The team deserves a lot of credit for its first official season in the NDCA season.
Group B is heading for a thrilling final weekend with four clubs in contention for a place in the semi-finals. Asians beat Paradise by 35 runs, while Highlands smashed Warriors by 185 runs.
Craig Elliott top scored with an unbeaten 99 runs, Braeden Coetzee contributed 76 runs while Wandile Nkosi scored 58.
Phoenix leads the Group A division in the Trevor Smith Sports Shield log, with Drakensberg Old Boys in second place and NDCA Invitation in third place.
Asians are in first place in the Group B division, with Paradise in Second and Underdogs in third.
The final round fixtures will take place on February 18, when Asians will face Underdogs at Arbor Park Sports Grounds, Warriors will play against Paradise at Paradise Sports Grounds. At Ferrum Sports Grounds, NDCA Invitation will face Eagles.
