Greens full of bowlers for Business League
Excellent bowls and huge congratulations to Veronica and Kees
Last Wednesday saw the greens full for the De Franca’s Spar Business League. The weather held off and 130-odd people came and had a fun-filled evening.
Four lucky bowlers win a Spar voucher in a lucky dip every Wednesday and one lucky person goes home with a leg of lamb won in a raffle.

This past weekend saw the Midlands Mixed Pairs being played at Klipbank. There were 19 teams with wild cards. The format was three games of 15 ends on Saturday, which was going well until after lunch when, after an average of six ends having been played, the lightning came with the rain, so the bowlers came off the greens to “wait and see”.
After a short interlude, play continued, but was concluded once all teams had played 10 ends. The scores were all tallied and eight teams were to return on Sunday to contest the quarter finals.
Play began on Sunday in very warm conditions and after 15 ends, four teams went on to play in the semi-finals. Another 15 ends and we were left with two teams battling for top honours. These two teams were both from Klipbank and three of the players are very well-known, these being Barbara Baleri, Kees Hillenaar and Veronica Malan.
The fourth bowler is really well-known in Bergville, but being a dual member, he decided to don his Klipbank shirt and partner Barbara – this being Jimmy Nel.
What a brilliant final, with both ladies as the skips – first time for Veronica and what a good job she did! By the 15th end, Veronica and Kees were ahead 14-6. Barbara had the last bowl and Jimmy asked her to try and trail the jack. She did it and they picked up eight shots and some insurance money for an eight-bowl.
Now the teams were peeled, so sudden death came into play. Picture it… Barbara is lying shot for the game and Veronica has the last bowl. Guess what?
Veronica trailed the jack to pick up three shots and win the game. Excellent bowls and huge congratulations to Veronica and Kees. Well done to Barbara and Jimmy for their financial win.
The Provincial bowlers leave for all their destinations this weekend and we wish them all the very best for the following week of bowls – just bring home the medals.
“See You On The Greens!”
