OSIZWENI – A resurgent Amajuba United has built up a head of steam in recent weeks.
The team kept up momentum with a hard-fought two-one victory over uThukela FC on Saturday afternoon, during an ABC Motsepe League Second Division clash at the oSizweni Stadium.
United went through a rough patch towards the middle of the season.
However, the home team has gradually got itself back into the groove with four victories and one draw in five outings.
This excluded Wednesday’s away match against Dundee Rangers.
In a rainy first half on Saturday, United drew first blood in the 29th minute, from the boot of the young and promising striker, Samuel Morajane.
However, the Ladysmith outfit proved its resilience and never-say-die attitude.
This paid dividends just a few minutes shy of half time, when Samuel Khoza gave the visitors the equaliser, to head into the break deadlocked.
United came back strongly in the second half, piling immense pressure on the opposition defence through attacking play from right-back, Siphamandla ‘Dlebe’ Shelembe, and in-form striker, Vusumusi ‘Poker’ Mahlambi.
This fighting spirit and robust attacking finally paid off in the 63rd minute.
Ever-improving left winger, Mandla ‘Skapi’ Thwala helped the home side regain the lead, which was enough to carry United to victory.
This was a huge boost of morale for the home team.
Having parted ways with Nathi Gule as coach towards the middle of the season, United endured torrid times under caretaker player/ coach, Zimele ‘Bravo’ Gumede.
The appointment of two seasoned coaches has served the team well.
Under the guidance of Thokozani Masondo, who was brought in as head coach, and Mandla Sohkela, United has gelled well and fights to end the season in the top six.
The team will be satisfied with this, having been in the relegation zone at a point.
Currently in 10th position out of 17 teams in the Second Division, United hopes to secure the points in nine remaining league matches, and finish the season on a high.
The first hurdle is against Maritzburg City this weekend at oSizweni Stadium from 3pm.
