From as early as five years old, Highlanders eighth man, Ruan Fourie has put in the hard yards to transform his professional rugby dreams into reality.
This paid off with his inclusion in the Sharks under-19 squad in May.
19-year-old Ruan was invited to the under-19 trials in Durban a few weeks earlier, and impressed enough to earn his position amid players from top clubs including Collegians, College Rovers and Jaguars.
He described his inclusion as a huge honour.
“I feel extremely proud and it’s humbling to represent my club at this level.”
Ruan said his selection did catch him by surprise, but gave assurances he would give his best efforts to do team and town proud.
He believes the call-up is the result of Highlanders’ promotion to the Premier Division.
“I expect to take full advantage of this opportunity, to prove myself and develop my skills and passion for rugby even further.”
After intensive training, Ruan takes to the field with the under-19s against Eastern Province this Thursday (July 15) at Growthpoint Kings Park.
This will be a curtain-raiser for the main game, the Sharks versus the Lions.
Explaining his journey with rugby, Ruan said he began playing at five, then went on to play for Drakensberg Primary School, Ferrum High School and then Boschpick Newcastle Highlanders.
He believes he has the focus to excel on the field.
“I work hard in the off season, gymming two times a day.”
In conclusion, Ruan extended his appreciation to all those who were involved with his development and preparation for his Sharks opportunity.
“If it’s God’s will, I hope to use my talent to play for even bigger teams one day.”
