Men bowl their way to success at the Men’s Club Singles Championships

The final stages of the Men’s Club Singles Championships were completed last weekend, with some excellent bowls being witnessed.

In the semi-final game of the Championships, Sid Price and Ron Howe did battle for the umpteenth time and with Sid picking up two fours early in the game to take a 17-7 lead on the 12th end, he appeared to be in total control.

Ron’s experience in these situations then came to the fore, and he fought back to 15-17 by the 17th end.

Sid then took a 20-16 lead with Ron replying with another two shots, before Sid clinched the game with another single to win 21-16.

The final battle between Sid and Trevor Smale followed soon after and another classic ensued.

Both players traded shots in the earlier stages of the game and peels was called at nine, 12 and 14.

On the 18th end, Trevor was leading 15-14 and then in the next five ends, Sid scored three braces and a single to Trevor’s one single to take the game 21-16, and become the Newcastle Singles Champion for an unprecedented 12th time – a worthy champion indeed!

The annual Arndt/Slabbert Pairs competition was played in Dundee last Saturday, with an entry of 24 teams participating.

Dundee’s Des Johnson and Louis de Jager were the eventual winners, closely followed by Newcastle’s Trevor Douthwaite and Ernie Phillips in second place and Carel and Hannelie Arndt in third place.
