Bulldogs teach old dogs new tricks on the rugby field
The final score of 38-28 was in favour of the champions, but they were made to dig deep for their win and kept the spectators on the edge of their seats
Last week Saturday, the Clover Leaf Candles Bulldogs played against the Old Dogs.
The Old Dogs team was made up of past legends of the game who played for the Bulldogs… And let me tell you, there is still plenty of bite and fight left in the “old boys”.
It was an awesome day of great rugby, the spectators being thoroughly entertained and the players enjoying themselves on the field.
The final score of 38-28 was in favour of the champions, but they were made to dig deep for their win and kept the spectators on the edge of their seats. The Bulldogs scored six tries and converted four, while the Old Dogs scored four tries and converted all, courtesy of Justus Bidulph. The oldest players on the field were Deon Kriel (51) and Thinus Ferreira (49). What a privilege to still be able to run onto a rugby field and put your body on the line!
A past captain, coach, absolute legend and great character of the game was once again coach for the Old Dogs. This gentleman is none other than Pieter Koortzen, who is known by everyone in Ladysmith. He gave a very heartwarming speech at the after-match function.
He thanked Mr Gerald Boardman, the sponsor, for all he has done for the club, even getting involved on the day to make 100% sure the field was prepared properly.
Pieter then presented Mr Boardman with a signed rugby ball from all the Old Dogs who played. This was done in appreciation for everything he has done for our beautiful club.
What an awesome gesture from the great man who really should still be involved in the club!

A big thank you to club chairman Andre Beukes, iron lady Linda Boshoff and Barbara Malan, Rene Liebenberg, Marietjie and Flippie Fourie, Deon van Wyk, Justus Bidulph and Martin Pieters. Without you all, this event would never have taken place.
Last but not least, thank you to everyone who came to Settlers Park to support and be part of this great game, giving up watching the Springboks vs the All Blacks game.
