CRICKETING legend, Sachin Tendulkar, is quoted as saying, “Enjoy the game, chase your dreams, because dreams do come true…”
Vryheid’s own cricketing legend-in-the-making, Joshua Stride, is actively chasing that dream and it looks all set to come true. Joshua, a Grade 9 pupil at Durban Boys’ High School, has been selected, along with a Grade 10 pupil, Brayden Sambhu, for the KZN Coastals u/15 cricket team and will play for the KZN team at the Inter Provincial Tournament in Bloemfontein in December.
Joshua lives in Blackmore House in Durban, but his roots are in Vryheid.
One of three brothers, all cricketers, Joshua has grown up with cricket in his blood and older brother Matthew Stride, who coached him at New Republic School, recalls proudly how Joshua showed a natural talent for the sport from a young age.

“Coaching him from grade 6 to 7, I saw he had the talent to become one of the best at school level and he is doing just that,” states proud big brother, Matthew, a cricketer himself.
Both of Joshua’s brothers, Nathan and Matthew, play for local cricket team, Mr X, while their father, Captain Gary Stride of the Vryheid K9 Unit, plays for the Gladiators at Vryheid Cricket Club. Joshua has played for the Gladiators as well.
