Maritzburg bowlers scoop 71st Friedmann Cup
The official opening ceremony as well as the singing of the National Anthem will start the record-breaking attempt with play is set to get underway at 8am sharp on Friday morning.
This past weekend saw the much-anticipated 71st edition of the Friedmann Cup being played at the Dundee Bowling Club.
A highly successful weekend indeed! The conditions could not have been more perfect although some did complain of the heat. The 152 bowlers from around the country experienced great hospitality and fellowship with friends both old and new. On Saturday evening, Monty Steele and his band from Newcastle provided the entertainment and, needless to say, a great evening was had by all. A huge thank you to the sponsors, Orange Grove Dairy, Charlies SuperSpar, Buffalo Coal and others too many to mention.
Bowls was the winner at the end of the day with Maritzburg West taking home the coveted first prize, The team comprised of current Protea player, Brendan Ainley, and his team, Bradley Robinson, Colin McDougal and Stephen Anley.
Newcastle were the runners-up – team that comprised of the Douthwaite brothers, John and Trevor, and Pierre Swart and Theuns Fraser. The winner of the Douthwaite/Bunger were Jason Lott, Rod McFadden, Monique Beavon and Ina Beavon from Parkhill bowling club, second Stephen Shaw, Greg Conolly, Ellen Cawker and Des Johnson. Just a reminder that the Kirkland Auctioneers Business League will commence again tomorrow evening. The SPCA will be selling food on the night for those who prefer not to braai, for those who do, braai fires will be lit so bring your basket, family, and friends along and come enjoy the evening.

Bowls will be played continuously until Sunday morning 8 am, amounting to 48 hours of continuous bowls! This promises to be a great weekend, food will be on sale and the bar will be open throughout the challenge, please come down to the club and support us in this momentous challenge.
