Golfers all decked out in their new outfits on day one

The captains of the premier clubs within the Mortimer Toyota League not only went on a buying spree for players, but also for new outfits.

The first game of the season is normally filled with excitement, curiosity and wonderment, and here I’m not talking golf but rather the new outfits that are on display. So move over Versace, Ralph Laurent and the rest. The designs and the colours of these new outfits are probably the best guarded secret in the club.

Much like the matric dance, the players and the fashion conscious waited in anticipation for the teams to reveal their new colours for the season.

Current champions The Scorpions looked like a million dollars in their stunning new range, while the Mortimer and Automark team went with the traditional red, which (as one pointed out) hides the blood when they bleed points.

Neal’s Tyres are looking resplendent in a designer outfit that was obviously sourced and put together by the wives, as there is no way the members of the team could be that creative.

Team Golf, not to be outdone, arrived with class, elegance, style and panache with a beautiful ensemble of modern, bright yet not over-the-top attire. For the rest of the teams, it was a case of last season’s style would do.

The players, full of faith, left the clubhouse at 8am to start a new season in the hopes that the gods of golf would be kind to them this year. Well, for some it was so, but for others it was the same procedure as last year, with The Scorpions, The Rough Riders and Neal’s Tyres all scoring a full house.

The Cloverleaf Titans are two points behind the pack, with an imported Cameron Wessels displaying great courage, skill and determination in his match. In what was possibly the match of the day, he almost caused a huge upset when he had to give away six shots and (playing off the men’s tees) took his opponent down to the wire.

In another close game, John Fourie fought a titanic battle with Segi, who was four up with four to play. Unfortunately, Segi hit the iceberg and they halved with one point apiece to leave Mortimer Toyota a further point behind.

Ashtol Gupta Ranoo was full of beans after their full house. He says the Four Must Get Beers will not be the first team they capture this year. Well done to the teams that won and a word from the rest of us – one win does not a Mortimer League champion make.

TEAM PROFILE: THE ROUGH RIDERS
The Rough Riders have, over the years, been the trendsetters in the fashion stakes. Others have tried to emulate them, but none have ever matched or played like this colour co-ordinated team.

Known for their outrageously bright, heart-racing, car guard colours in the past, this year they have gone for a delicious mulberry tone shirt, white cap and a variety colour of shorts. The jury is out over what colour shorts to wear; some opting for white, while beige and black are being discussed.

They have been renamed among the other teams, from the car guards to the Mortimer’s Mulberry Mashers.

The team remains unchanged this year.

After last year’s surprising loss in the final, they have regrouped and come out fighting.

Their captain is quietly confident that the new colours will have a calming effect on the players and that they will be up there where they belong at the end of the year.
