Local brothers cross the finish line, covered in dirt
Both boys were able to put down a solid race run after some difficulties with their tyres
Local brothers Struan and Cullen McMaster took park in the first Downhill National for 2018 in Paarl, Cape Town, on Sunday, January 28. The track was extremely fast due to the dusty, dry conditions and saw many riders cross the finish line covered in dirt.
Both boys were able to put down a solid race run after some difficulties with their tyres. “Having to deal with mechanical issues on race day is always a challenge, but you need to be prepared and be able to work quickly to repair the problem. Anything can happen on your practice run, from damaged rims to losing a chain or slitting tyres on sharp rocks,” said Struan.
Cullen added that, “When this happens, you have to remain focused, deal with the problem in the shortest possible time, and get back up the mountain for your final race run before that whistle blows. If you miss your start time, you are out of the race.”
The South African Championships will take place in April. They are excited about the new track that is being specially built at Hartbeespoort Dam and will boast the first cable car shuttle system in South Africa.
