Pleased with new names on the bowls trophy
It was certainly Bob and Liefie’s weekend, as they took control of the game from the beginning and had a really big win
Wednesday evening saw 28 teams come together to begin the Spar Business League. We saw many of the old faces and quite a few new ones as well.
So welcome one and all, and may you all enjoy the next six weeks of bowls and fellowship.
The games were opened with Greg De Franca rolling the first bowl.
De Franca’s have entered a team that knows a little about the game, but what can one say except a huge thanks to De Franca’s Spar for their continued sponsorship and support. This past weekend saw the Midlands Mixed Pairs being played. 16 teams entered and with four sections of four, the games began!
In the searing heat, everyone played to the best of their ability and at the end of the day, after three games each, the top four teams to go through to the semi-finals were announced.
So Sunday morning saw: Donovan Fischer and Fran Baleri play Bob Corringham and Liefie Oosthuizen, and Kees Hillenaar and Veronica Malan play Jess Thompson and Damion Bosch – from The Nest.
The morning was cool with the threat of rain, but these bowlers were so determined to get to the final that the weather did not bother them at all.
The game between Donovan and Bob was a nail-biter and on the 14th end, the game was 17 all.
The last end depended on who could get the closest and be able to stay… Bob’s third bowl landed right next to the jack and Donovan’s last bowl just missed taking the jack or the bowl, so Bob declared his last bowl, and Bob and Liefie went through to the finals.
Poor Veronica and Kees could just not find the grass, nor the weight, and every time they got close, the opposition managed to get the shot. So after 15 ends, it was Jess and Damion in the finals.
The finals began after lunch and what can you say, it was certainly Bob and Liefie’s weekend, as they took control of the game from the beginning and had a really big win over Jess and Damion.
I personally am thrilled to have new names on the trophy, and to Bob and Liefie,really well done and superb bowling!
This coming weekend sees the District Senior and Open Singles play-off being held at Klipbank, so another full weekend of what should be very exciting bowls.
March is now upon us, so for Gavin Moore, Bennie Malan, Liz Robinson, Emma van Deventer and Raymond Streatfield, may you all have a wonderful birthday and a great year ahead.
On March 9, Klipbank will be having another Cuisine Evening, so please make a note in your diaries and come and enjoy some good food and a very pleasant evening.
