Debut community marathon enjoyed by all participants

The marathon also aims to celebrate the life of the first citizen of KwaZulu-Natal, the Premier Willies Mchunu, who was a citizen of Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality

With the aim of promoting healthy lifestyles, a race and fun run were hosted last Saturday. The marathon was made up of a 10km challenge and a 5km fun run.

The Minister of Sport and Recreation Bongi Sithole Moloi visited Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality and together with Mayor Jabulile Mbhele, welcomed all the participants.

Mrs Moloi’s visit was to launch the very first, annual marathon, which will welcome people of all ages in and around Estcourt to participate.

The marathon also aims to celebrate the life of the first citizen of KwaZulu-Natal, the Premier Willies Mchunu, who was a citizen of Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality’s Ward Nine in the Wembezi township.

The 10km challenge started at Estcourt High School and the ended at the Wembezi sport field. The 5km started at the Wembezi sport field, proceeded around the township and ended at the sport field. Mrs Moloi said she was excited to see the race well supported within the municipality.

Mrs Moloi, Mrs Mbele, Mr Madlala and President of the Loskop Gijima team and its winners.

Among the distinguished guests were the Mayor of Alfred Duma, Councillor Madlala, Councillor Z Sikhosana, Councillor Ndumo, Councillor NE Mazibuko, Ward 17 Councillor N Mvelase and Ward Nine Councillor Dladla, whose wards co-hosted the race.

Mrs Mbele expressed her pleasure at seeing Inkosi Langalibalele’s athletic teams who have great talent. The first five top achieving athletes in each category were awarded cash prizes.The day was enjoyed by all who attended.
