Firing on all cylinders

The fearless or more foolish players arrived in shorts and looking much like the Smurfs

The sixth round of the Mortimer Toyota League was contested on Sunday in icy conditions and the course shrouded in mist. The fearless or more foolish players arrived in shorts and looking much like the Smurfs, putting on a brave blue face.

As the morning progressed, the day became warmer and the golf hotter, with a few upsets happening along the way.

The big movers on the day were Mortimer who, playing against their second-hand cousins Toyota Automark, scored the biggest victory of the day and collected six points.

The only member of Automark to win his game was Themba Ntuli, who obviously did not get the memo from Mortimer Toyota head office that marred what would have been a well-deserved full house.

The win has moved Mortimer to the top of the table and there is no truth in the rumour that Themba is looking for new employment. In a cunning move, reminiscent of a well-known rugby coach of old who would change his starting line-up just before kick-off, the shrewd Bullets captain pulled the same move, which left the Rough Riders a little psyched out. His bold and brave move certainly paid dividends, as they managed to take four points off their more fancied opponents.

With the majority of the teams scoring four points apiece, the positions on the table hardly moved.

Mortimer lead the log, with the Rough Riders and the Scorpions just one point adrift. Neal’s Tyres, Automark and The Bullets are still not out of the race and could cause an upset or two in the closing stages.

The big question on everyone’s lips is:

Can Mortimer maintain their current good form and keep the hungry pack behind them at bay.

Their captain, Wynand, is very happy with the way the team have come together and applied themselves to the task.

He also stated that it is important that they don’t get ahead of the game and they will take it one match at a time.

The play of the day was the fine win by one of our up and coming young golfers, Aiden Sirchia, over the much more qualified and experienced Bheki Mbokazi.

The next round will be played on August 5.
