Golfers brave the rain

A few mad locals and Englishmen, much like Scott of the Antarctic, went out into the midday blizzard and played the game

The weather closed in on Friday evening (August 17) to leave the members up the creek with a frozen paddle.

With the fires lit and the great music of the 60s and 70s playing softly on the suburban music blaster, the members settled down to a lovely Friday evening supper while unwinding from a busy week.

After weeks off planning the Ladysmith Construction monthly mug, we were greeted with conditions that would only make ice cream happy.

The rain was steadily falling on the golf course and with temperatures that only a polar bear would enjoy, the gofers started to phone and cancel their tee off times.

The course was as deserted as a construction site in wet weather as the players preferred the warmth of the bar.

A decision was made to postpone the Ladysmith Construction mug to a later date.

It is quite sad to note that just the other week we were saying that golfers were a hardy and tough bunch and how they would brave the elements for a game of beloved golf, only to have them cancel this week just because of a little rain, sleet, snow on the berg and cold.

But there were a few mad locals and Englishmen who, much like Scott of the Antarctic, went out into the midday blizzard and played the game.

Sunday, with the sun shining brightly, saw our A Team (nothing like the TV series) and the Frogs (not the pond variety) leave bright and early and travel to Kilbarchan to play league.

After a delayed start due to technical reasons, one of our more senior players in the Frogs realised he had left his golf shoes at home.

So without delay, he set off to delay us further and collect his shoes.

The results were a mixed bag, with the A Team collecting four points and the Frogs, or should I say Chris Nel, harvesting two points.

The B Team travelled to the club, where Ladysmith 1 played Ladysmith 2.

The no. 1s, being just too good for their brothers, reaped a full house of points.

Sunday also saw a number of bowlers take advantage of the good weather and turn up for the ever-popular Mick’s Rules.

With a number of players away for the day, the organisers had to shuffle some of the teams around.

With one of their members absent, Dave Simpson drew the lucky straw and was assigned to play in Dave Salmond’s star-studded team.

Thanks to Dave’s excellent knowledge of bowls and his unerring talent to squeeze the best out of his players, he soon had the imported Dave Simpson playing like a grand master.

It is important to note that this is the first game in a number of years that Dave Simpson has actually been on a winning side.

He was so chuffed with the sweet taste of victory that he stayed a lot longer to taste the sweet lager on offer.

One has to feel sorry for his teammate, Vernon Sanders, who, like Dave, has not had a victory for many a year and continued this proud tradition with his adopted team, still waiting for a win.

I am told that the results and the league standings will be available as soon as someone decides to work them out.

Thanks to all those who played over the weekend and we look forward to seeing you all at the club soon.
