Senior bowlers keep calm on the grass

One of the year’s most prestige tournaments, the Ladies and Men’s Masters, takes place at The Nest BC this weekend, with 12 selected players vying to add this coveted title to their triumphs.

Richards Bay Bowling Club hosted the KwaZulu-Natal Country Bowls (KZNCB) Open and Senior Singles playoffs at the weekend.

This competition saw the winners and runners-up from the Midlands, Northerns and Zululand Zones, competing to determine the district champion.

In the Ladies Open Section, young Fran Baleri (Klipbank Bowling Club: 10 + 45) won all her games to annex the title, with her mother Barbara (6 + 18) in second place.

Newcastle’s Samantha Shaw (6 + 15) finished third.

The Men’s Open title was won by the evergreen Theuns Fraser (The Nest BC), who was also unbeaten (10 + 63), with Barry Mutlow (Richards Bay: 6 + 2) and Mike Bowman (Mtunzini: 6 – 6) in second and third place respectively.
Veronica Malan (Klipbank BC: 8 + 50) won the Ladies’ Senior title, followed by Anita Scott (Richards Bay: 4 + 29) and Yvonne Steenkamp (Empangeni: 4 – 1).

The Men’s Senior title was won by Brian Edwards (Empangeni: 8 + 50), with Newcastle’s Ron Howe, who recovered from a slow start to take second place (6 + 18), followed by Phil Rooke (Bergville: 6+ 10).

The Club Meat Competition on Saturday, was won by the team of Billy Nicholas, Henk Zaal, Gert Roos and Denise Phillips – well done!
