Winners dominate on the bowling green
The final between Stephen and the 2009 champion Mike was a see-saw event with Mike starting off strongly to lead 8-2.
The KZNCB Masters Singles Championships was played at The Nest Bowling Club last weekend in idyllic berg surroundings. Competition was keen throughout the weekend, with not one player winning all their games.
Section A of the ladies was won by Rita Meyer (Dundee, 8 +32) followed by Alta de Kok (Vryheid 8 + 15) and Veronica Malan (Klipbank 6 + 8). Section B’s winner was Fran Baleri (Klipbank 8 + 26) with Noela Dreyer (Vryheid 8 + 240 in close pursuit and Essel Schoeman (Richards Bay 6 + 13).
In the final between the two section winners, Rita got off to a flying start, and by the 17th end she was leading 20 -7. Fran then staged a remarkable recovery, scoring 9 shots in the next five ends to narrow the gap to 20 -16, before Rita managed to get the final shot needed to clinch the title.
The men’s Section A was equally competitive with a number of 20/20 games recorded. Section A winner was Stephen Shaw (Newcastle 8 + 6) followed by Tony de Pooter (Newcastle 6 + 8) and the defending champion, Theuns Fraser (The Nest 6 + 2). Section B was won by Mike Bowman (Mtunzini 8 + 20) with Phil Rooke (Bergville 6 + 7) second and Dion Leaity (4 +13) third.

Stephen then found his weight and took the lead at 13-9 before another rally by Mike saw him edge ahead at 20-15.
Not to be outdone, a determined Stephen scored a 3 and a 2 to level the score at 20 all. On the final head Stephen put his first bowl right on the jack which Mike could not remove giving an elated Stephen his maiden Masters victory.
District President Gavin Robinson complimented The Nest on the standard of their greens and all the players for the quality of bowls and the spirit in which the games were played.
On the local front, in the monthly Fedauto meat competition, Billy Nicholas created what must be a club record by winning his fourth successive chicken competition, and will soon be opening his own butchery.
The rest of his team was Lukas Niemand, Nan Winterbach and Marius Bouwer(Snr). The runners-up were Trevor Hutchinson, Simon Ball and Edith Pretorius.
