The intrepid group of athletes boarded a bus bound for Cape Town, giving themselves a few days to enjoy the sights and sounds of the stunning Cape.
They traipsed around the central business district, imbibing much of the rich culture, and are convinced that they now know Cape Town almost as well as they know Estcourt.
The gruelling 56km marathon took place on April 20 and the runners were greeted with the unfortunate news of a route change due to protest action.
Ou Kaapse Weg is deemed to be an even more formidable climb than the scenic Chapman’s Peak, but having prepared well, the local runners did not disappoint.
Bhekumuzi Mntambo was home in a time of 4:32.58 to finish in 551st place, while Sbusiso Ndaba completed the race in 4:41.55 to achieve the 728th position. This is an incredible feat when you consider that this ultra-marathon hosts 13,000 runners on the day!
Khulane Dube came in at 5:15.14 in 1934th place, Ewart Hadebe in 6:48.42 (9017th position), Henry Mvelase in 6:55.44 and France Radebe in 6:58.20. Well done to the men of ECA!
Adorned with medals, smart new race shirts and rather weary legs, they clambered onto the bus and headed home both exhausted and elated.
Special mention must be made of Dixie Brown, as she posted an incredible time for the 21km event of 2:09.10, achieving second place in her age category at this prestigious event. Gendraj
Harripersad completed the 21km event in a commendable 2:36.29. The club welcomes new runners to join in at the time trials on Tuesday evenings at 5.30pm.
The club is situated in Victoria Street next to the Catholic Church. Social runners and walkers are also more than welcome.
