Local fours trounce the tough competition
The Dundee final was won by Sylvia’s team in a closely-fought contest, while the men’s final provided some friendly rivalry, with good shots being traded by both teams.
Vryheid Bowling Club hosted the Northern Zone Men’s and Ladies’ Fours on Saturday, in ideal autumn conditions.
After the completion of the day’s play, with each team playing three games, the two women’s sections were won by the Dundee teams, skipped by Rita Meyer and Sylvia Malan respectively, with the men’s sections won by two Newcastle teams: John and Trevor Douthwaite, Tony de Pooter and Adrian van der Merwe, and Douglas Steele, Stephen Shaw, Fritz Botha and Lukas Niemand.
The organisers wisely allowed the finals to be played on the teams’ home greens, to avoid unnecessary travelling.

With the score at 10 – 4 on the sixth end, it looked like John’s team was headed for victory.
However, a well-played three followed by a single saw Doug’s team back in the fray, only two shots behind.
On the 10th end, with the score at 12 – 9, it was still anyone’s game, but scoring on the next four ends, John’s team secured the game to annex the Bowman Cup.
All four teams now qualify for the KwaZulu-Natal Country Bowls (KZNCB) Fours Playoffs, to be held at the Klipbank Bowling Club in Ladysmith at the end of the month.
