NKZN schools enjoy rugby dominance

The coveted Reitz VKB Rugby Trophy, for under-19 provincial teams, is back in Northern KZN. The Junior Lammergeiers beat Free State South by 28 points to 18 in the final, which took place in Reitz in the Free State.
Shuvaun Palm of Sarel Cilliers High School was judged Man of the Match, and was selected for the South African 7s touring side to Dubai this December. Dave van der Westhuizen of Northern KZN Schools Rugby, said the NKZN team had, for the past 5 years, made it to the final of the tournament.
“They won in 2014, but gave up the trophy to the Leopards in 2015 and 2018. This win is a wonderful indication of the strength of our high school rugby here.”
Not to be outdone, the under-18 NKZN team won the Rhino Rugby Week in Vanderbijlpark last week. The team beat the Valke 26 – 24 in the final, to complete Northern KZN’s dominance of schoolboy rugby.
“What made the under-18s’ victory so special was that they competed in a tournament for under-19s. The quality of players we have here was clearly demonstrated,” concluded Mr van der Westhuizen.
