NKZN wrestlers grapple for three medals
After many long hours of training and preparation, NKZN wrestlers returned home many medals richer.
The Northern KwaZulu-Natal Rhino wrestlers were again on a medal charge last week at the National Wrestling Championships in Middelburg. Three of the four KZN medals were courtesy of NKZN boys.
Competing in his 10th National Championships, Ricky Basson made the cut for the finals. On all 9 previous occasions, Ricky fell slightly short, but this time earned a bronze medal in the very competitive freestyle division, for under-20 men between 60 and 65kg. He topped this off with a silver medal in the Greco-Roman category.
Nollie Brown, also competing in his 10th championship, struck gold in the Greco-Roman category for boys u-17, 110kg. This was also Nollie’s 10th SA title. Keegan Basson competed in the Greco-Roman u-20 67kg division, and managed 4th place in a very strong field.
Competing in the Greco-Roman u-17 80kg category, Kyle Senekal found the going tough. Weighing in at 71.1kg, the heavier opponents gave him a good workout and beat him to a 5th place finish. Novice, Daniel Mostert gave his all to place 5th in the Greco-Roman category, and 7th in the Freestyle event.
Os de Wet from Newcastle was the other member of the KZN group. He managed a bronze medal in the Greco-Roman u-20 67kg division. Steven Brown, chairman of KZN Wrestling, applauded the young wrestlers on their achievements.
“Hours and hours of hard work were put in, preparing these athletes for the National Championships. We are also very grateful for Orange Grove Dairy’s contribution. All these medal winners are products of the Orange Grove wrestling development programme,” he concluded.
