Young cycling star conquers the roads

Azhar Khan is a youngster who’s been “ripping up the roads” on two wheels in Ladysmith and around the country. Azhar (12) has been cycling since he was eight years old, having been inspired by his father Yusuf.

He has followed in his father’s footsteps (or should we say cycling tracks) and has been part of Ladysmith’s Siegetown Wheelers Cycling Club for over two years now.

Azhar is a natural in the saddle and believes he was “born to be on a bicycle”.

He has already competed in many cycling events in Ladysmith and also around the country, even mountain biking events. A highlight was competing at the SA U/13 Champs in Hillrest and Lions Park, where he came 11th, just missing the top 10.

Some of the other major events conquered by Azhar include the Tour Durban, the Amashova and the Ladysmith Siegetown Wheelers Cycling Challenge.

Speaking to Azhar, he says that when he is out on the road, he feels free. “It’s fun and I enjoy every moment of it!” he enthuses.

When he is not racing against others, there’s nothing he loves more than a pleasant ride with his dad.

This year, Azhar will be taking on the Amashova and the Ladysmith Cycle Challenge.
