Golfers swing against cancer

49 golfers took to the greens at Newcastle Golf Club, raising R3 675 towards cancer research, education, screenings and patient care.

Springbok supporters were glued to the television on Saturday morning, delaying the start of the Sanlam Cancer Challenge.

While they hoped for an outright win against New Zealand’s formidable All Blacks, most conceded they could not scoff at a draw.

After the rugby match, 49 golfers took to the greens at Newcastle Golf Club, raising R3 675 towards cancer research, education, screenings and patient care.

Ebert Koorts scooped first place in the Men’s A Division, while Dries Els came first in the B Division.

Ronnie Acker was the C Division winner.

Among the female participants, Jenny Darvall claimed first place in the Ladies’ A Division, Tracy Lee finished first in the B Division and Ronel Delport won the C Division.

“We host the Sanlam Cancer Challenge at the Newcastle Golf Club every year, to show our support for some of our members who have been diagnosed with cancer, and to assist cancer patients in the community in some small way,” said Club Manager, Elred Darvall.

“The event is generally well supported and we are hoping for an even bigger turnout next year.”
