Young runners shine at Vryheid parkrun with strong age grades

Mamush Bekele takes overall honours as seven Vryheid parkrun participants record new personal bests.

Vryheid parkrun saw another strong turnout this week, with Mamush Bekele taking first place overall and Izelda Meyer finishing as the first female runner.

Seven new personal bests

Seven participants also recorded new personal best times, with congratulations going to Izelda, Simphiwe, Lewzi, Tyler, Tanya, Alta and Jacobus.

Junior runners make their mark

The younger runners once again made their mark, with junior athletes Dirco Kotzé and Izelda recording the two highest age-grade percentages of the day.

Age grading compares a runner’s time with the world-record time for their age and gender, producing a percentage that allows participants to compare performances across different age groups. Both Dirco and Izelda recorded more than 60%, an achievement that organisers described as particularly impressive.

The system takes into account age and gender, although course and weather differences mean the percentages are best viewed as a fun way to compare performances.

Another milestone celebrated

Another milestone was celebrated as Ursula reached both 50 volunteer credits and 100 participation events.

Summer start time begins in October

From October 3, Vryheid parkrun will move to its summer start time of 07:00.
