Swimmers hone their skills

With the children eager to prove their worth in the water, the gala was the first step in the path towards competitive swimming.

The Department of Sports and Recreation hosted a development gala on Saturday morning, at Amcor Municipal Swimming Pool.

According to Raj Ramautar, head swimming coach of Newcastle Swimming Club and portfolio for swimming development, the gala was intended as a motivational gala for participants.

“We had focused on previously disadvantaged children, introduced them to swimming and develop their talents,” he said.

With the children eager to prove their worth in the water, the gala was the first step in the path towards competitive swimming.

“There are four levels in swimming, which are Level 0, 1, 2 and 3. This was a Level 0 gala, and all the children here are beginners. The purpose of the gala was to check on their progress and to encourage them to continue participating in the swimming club, as swimming is no easy sport and takes a lot of work and discipline. Once we hone in on their talents, which is shown in the gala, we start developing them further so that they can start participating in a competitive level,” Mr Ramautar explained.

With sunny weather prevailing on Saturday, the children took the plunge into the cool water and eagerly displayed their skills.
