Vryheid schools impress at Northern KZN hockey challenge
Pionier and Vryheid High deliver outstanding performances at the Northern KZN hockey regional.
Vryheid’s hockey talent was on full display at the Northern KZN Regional of the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge on Saturday, with both Hoërskool Pionier and Vryheid High School producing outstanding performances against some of the province’s top teams.
Pionier falls short in dramatic final
Pionier came heartbreakingly close to reclaiming the regional title, eventually going down to defending champions Ferrum High School in a dramatic penalty shootout final on the hosts’ home turf.
After an intense final finished level at 1-1 in regulation time, Ferrum edged Pionier 3-2 in the shootout to secure their eleventh Northern KZN regional title.
Charissa Volschenk gives Pionier early lead
The final delivered end-to-end action from the opening whistle. Ferrum applied early pressure with several short corners, but the Pionier defence stood firm. Against the run of play, Pionier struck first near the 13-minute mark when Charissa Volschenk broke down the left flank, beat the final defender and calmly slotted home to hand the Vryheid side the lead.
Ferrum responded three minutes later after being awarded a penalty stroke. Sphe Ninela converted to level the scores and force a tense finish.
Penalty shootout decides champion
In the shootout, Volschenk once again found the back of the net for Pionier, while Anje Erasmus also converted her chance. Ferrum, however, held their nerve through goals from Lariska Nell, Ava Strydom and Ninela to seal victory.
Strong tournament run for Pionier
Pionier’s road to the final included an impressive 2-0 semi-final win over Newcastle High School, last year’s runners-up. The Vryheid team also held Ferrum to a goalless draw during the pool stages earlier in the day, underlining just how closely matched the two sides were throughout the tournament.
Vryheid High pushes Ferrum in semi-final
Vryheid High School also enjoyed a strong campaign, finishing second in their pool before pushing Ferrum all the way in a tightly contested semi-final. After regulation time ended 0-0, Ferrum advanced via a 2-0 penalty shootout victory.
The local side showed grit and discipline throughout the tournament and once again proved themselves among the strongest hockey schools in Northern KZN.
Mercy Chituku wins special prize
Adding to the Vryheid celebrations, Vryheid High School’s Mercy Chituku won the Princess Stick lucky draw prize during the event.
Ferrum advances to grand finals
Ferrum’s victory means they qualify for the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge Grand Finals in July, where they will face other regional winners from across KwaZulu-Natal.
